The Railway Station

Mobberley Station opened in 1862 at the same time as the Altrincham to Northwich stretch of the Manchester to Chester railway was being built. Before this line opened the nearest railway station was at Wilmslow 4 miles away. Wilmslow station was built twenty years previosly in 1842 and Mobberley village folk depended on this as this quickest route into Manchester

The last steam trains operated on the Manchester to Chester line in the 1960's. The Altrincham to Chester line via Mobberley still runs diesel trains, this part of the line not yet being electrified.

Up until 1967 the station had 20 oil lamps which had to be lighted individually each day by station staff. Ted Roberts the station master for over 20 years, performed the last ever lamp-lighting, a photo of this event is displayed at the 'Bulls Head' Public house ,Mill lane.

The main station building was sold in the early 1980's and conveted to offices. It has recently been vacated as shown by the 'To-Let' sign in the photo above.
